A child's runny nose - how to deal with it?

Untreated runny nose lasts seven days, and a treated week. This is true, but not for infants who, if ignored, can lead to more serious consequences: otitis or sinusitis.

So, when a baby has a stuffy nose and sneezes, is there something to worry about? Does the parent have to face other consequences besides sleepless nights and worse mood of the child? Does a baby's runny nose need treatment and a doctor's appointment?

It is worth protecting especially a small child ...

Particularly troublesome for parents is runny nose in the youngest babies - up to the fifth month of life. Such babies usually suffer the cold the worst. A child who is often lying down is cranky, tearful. A clogged nose does not allow him to sleep, and a frequent cough causes real pain. In addition, when we consider the fact that an infant cannot take most medications until the age of three months, it gets nervous ...

What can you do if we fail to protect the youngest baby from illness? How to treat a runny nose in an infant?

The basis is often carrying the child in his arms in an upright position. It is also worth putting your toddler on the tummy as often as possible so that the discharge in the nose can flow freely. The nose must be instilled with physiological saline or sea water and the secretion removed with a special aspirator. This is the basis. Of course, it is also worth complying with most of the rules we write below, excluding the use of medicines, which should be consulted with a doctor in the case of the youngest child.

When the child is bigger, A baby's runny nose is usually not so burdensome to the environment. The older baby crawls, spends a lot of time in a sitting position, sometimes also walks, thanks to which he naturally gets rid of secretions. In addition, the natural curiosity of the world, which in the following months of the child's development is much greater than at the beginning, allows both the parent and child to survive the disease more easily.

Runny nose in an infant: the right temperature and humidity

For a parent, the right temperature in the bedroom and a good airing out of the room where the child is staying may seem a secondary matter. In practice, however, sometimes it is enough to change your daily habits so that the baby is not exposed to drying of the nasal mucosa and to difficult breathing.

The temperature in the bedroom should be about 20-21 degrees. Meanwhile, in most apartments, the temperature is maintained around 23-24 degrees during the heating season.

It is equally important to moisturize the air during the heating season, which has a preventive effect. It's best to invest in a special one weather station, which measures the humidity inside and outside the building (to buy in home appliances and electronics stores for about PLN 100), which will indicate whether the humidity is optimal or the air is dried. If it turns out to be too dry, just pour water into a ceramic humidifier hanged on a radiator, hang wet towels in a child's room, or use a professional electric water humidifier (In addition to water, some models may also distribute oils dissolved in water).

It is also worth noting that too high humidity is not recommended. It promotes the development of mites and mold. That is why we recommend buying a weather station that makes it easier to care for the right humidity. If we do not plan to invest in another device, let's stick to the rules to turn on the humidifier only 2-3 times a day for a maximum of 10 minutes.

Irrigation

A baby's runny nose requires increased fluid intake.

A cold child should drink a lot, so give it to your child a lot of teas created especially for babies, lenses, or simply mineral water. Attach the younger infant to the breast more often, even if it would only suck for a minute or two. Your milk, thanks to the antibodies contained in it, will allow him to deal with the disease faster.

Under no circumstances force your child to eat. Even if you do not feel like traditional meals or even easily digestible dishes, nothing will happen if for a few days the baby will eat less or even drink only your milk.
